Permits

Most projects and activities in San Francisco Bay and along its shoreline require a permit from BCDC. Find resources here to learn about the permitting process and apply for a permit.

Apply for a BCDC permit

How it works

1. Check if you need a BCDC permit
2. Coordinate early with BCDC staff

Meet with us early if you’re planning a large or complex project.

3. Get local discretionary permits and other necessary approvals

Most projects need approvals from other agencies before you can apply to BCDC.

4. Submit a permit application form

Prepare and submit your application.

5. Get a decision

The Commission votes on major projects, while others are reviewed by BCDC staff.

Amend a BCDC permit

Already have a permit? If there has been a change to the project’s design or schedule, you may need to request an amendment to your permit.

Meet our permit teams

BCDC has several specialized teams responsible for reviewing permit applications.
